Finishing second in the Belgian Golden Shoe award, the Moroccan international was nowhere to be found during the ceremony in Lint.
Mehdi Carcela was nominated for the Belgian Golden Shoe award last night, which goes to the best player in the Jupiler League over the last year. After racking up a decent amount of votes, it was revealed that the tree final nominees were Carcela, Hans Vanaken of Club Brugge and Genk’s Alejandro Pozuelo.
The tree contenders were called up to the podium before the final announcement, but instead of the Moroccan winger entering the stage, his manager at Standard Liège, Michel Preud’homme, went in his place next to Vanaken and Pozuelo.
“It looks like Carcela has fallen asleep,” said host Maarten Breckx. Preud’homme looked embarrassed and had to apologize in the name of the club for his player’s absence, stating that “he should have been here.” He also admitted that Carcela is struggling with disciplinary problems, but that as long as he’s performing on the field you can accept it.
