Mehdi Carcela played a big part in another Standard Liège win, as The Reds aim for a Champions League spot.
While Morocco’s national team played two of their preparation games for this summer’s World Cup during the last week, Mehdi Carcela have been training with Standard Liège as he wasn’t picked by coach Hervé Renard. Friday night, the Belgian side opened the Championship round of the Jupiler League against Sporting Charleroi at home and Carcela proved again why he still can’t be totally excluded from the World Cup discussion.
Standard won the game 1-0 after a late goal by Edmilson Jr. The Belgian winger curled in the winner from distance but yet again it was Carcela who provided the last pass. He has now registered four assists, as well as two goals, since returning on loan to his boyhood club from Granada in January, after an unsuccessful spell with Olympiacos.
As things stand, Standard are now only three points behind Anderlecht, who sit in 2nd and could still clinch a spot in the qualification of next season’s Champions League. Especially if Carcela can keep up his excellent form.
